LINEAR TRANSFORMS FOR STATE-PARAMETER STRUCTURE. EDITION TWO.

Abstract

The vertical structure of the atmospheric state-parameters is modelled so that an arbitrary column may be completely specified by a finite number of single values. The model incorporates the equation of state and the hydrostatic equation, and is characterized by pressure levels defining a number of layers within which the static stability is independent of pressure. Thus stability is piecewise constant in an arbitrary column. A particular expression for the stability parameter is arrived at by demanding linearity in pertinent relationships and by considering structure within a layer.
