MILITARY POTENTIAL TEST OF THE CAPACITANCE-TYPE LIQUID-QUANTITY-SYSTEM TEST SET, MODEL TF-20-1.

Abstract

The military potential test of the TF-20-1 Capacitance-Type Liquid-Quantity-System Test was conducted. The purpose of this test was to determine the suitability of the test item as a replacement for the standard MD-1 and MD-2A fuel-quantity system test sets. The TF-20-1 offered several advantages over the standard MD-1 and MD-2A fuel-quantity system test sets, as follows: (1 ) weighed less and had less volume, (2) combined the functions into one test set, (3) simplified connection to the fuel system, and (4) used internal circuitry for calibrating the test set indicators. U S Army Human Engineering Laboratories' evaluation revealed several unsatisfactory human factors conditions. It is concluded that although there are no technical characteristics against which to test this equipment, the TF-20-1 Capacitance-Type Liquid-Quantity-System Test Set is suitable for Army use as a replacement for the standard MD-1 and MD-2A fuel-quantity system test sets on the basis of the characteristics of the standard test sets. It is recommended that before the test item is adopted for Army use those unsatisfactory conditions reported by U S Army Human Engineering Laboratories be corrected and sufficient cable assemblies be provided to test all Army aircraft having capacitance-type fuel-quantity systems, and that technical characteristics be written for this type of item.
