THE PREPARATION AND FABRICATION OF AROMATIC POLYIMIDES.

Abstract

Aromatic polyimides have been prepared for pyromellitic dianhydride and a range of aromatic diamines. The effect of a number of variables on the polymerisation to, and the degradation of the intermediate polypyromellitamic acids has been studied and a previously unrecorded reaction intermediate has been isolated and identified. From these studies the conditions necessary to obtain high molecular weights have been defined. Mechanically strong films and mouldings have been obtained where permitted by the diamine component.
