AN ANALYSIS OF THE FEASIBILITY OF USING DATA FROM THE ARMY EQUIPMENT RECORDS SYSTEM (TAERS) IN THE DETERMINATION OF REPAIR-PARTS REQUIREMENTS FOR AUTOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT.
Abstract
This analysis was divided into two parts: In the first, a study was made of maintenance actions that occurred but were not entered on TAERS maintenance records in the field. The information for this analysis was gathered for RAC Study RP-162.2 (Materiel Readiness and Maintenance Policy and Reports Related Thereto) during a field training exercise (FTX) in United States Army, Europe (USAREUR) in January 1965. Maintenance actions for 211 M113 APCs posted on regular TAERS forms were compared with those posted in special booklets that had been distributed to the vehicle drivers for use in recording maintenance activity during the exercise. The second part of the analysis dealt with another form of data leakage, i.e., the situation in which information is recorded on the TAERS forms but does not appear in the computer-tape equipment-history files. The analysis was performed by studying information available for 55 M60 tanks in the 1st Bn, 33d Armor, 3d Armd Div. Data were collected and edited for the period May 1962-September 1963 from organization and field-level maintenance records found in vehicle logbooks; these data were compared with information appearing on TAERS equipment-history tapes for the period January 1962-September 1963.
