SPACE VEHICLE ATTITUDE CONTROL WITH A MODIFIED VISCOUS LANCHESTER DAMPER.

Abstract

Some applications of space probes or satellites require that the vehicle be spin stabilized about the principal axis of maximum moment of intertia. In this report, a passive precession damper for stabilization of a space vehicle is analyzed, and basic requirements for such a damper are discussed. Exact equations of motion for a modified viscous Lanchester damper are determined. Owing to the unwieldy nature of these equations, certain approximations are made that yield suitable equations for preliminary design of a modified viscous Lanchester damper. (Author)
