MEDIUM-POWER, LOW-NOISE TUBE DEVELOPMENT.
Abstract
A TWT meeting all electrical and mechanical specifications was developed and two sample tubes were delivered to the Department of the Navy for evaluation. It was found through laboratory tests on over 100 vacuum envelopes comprising some 40 different models, that many individual major tube characteristics, such as gain, gain flatness, noise figure, saturated power output, gain compression at the +33 dbm output level, and noise figure could repeatedly be made to meet and exceed the specifications. However, it is extremely difficult to make a TWT which will meet all specifications with one adjustment of the TWT electrode voltages. Minor tube-to-tube variations which appear despite efforts to maintain tight control over the fabrication of the vacuum envelope and the PPM magnet package were sufficient to prevent meeting all specifications simultaneously on most of the tubes tested. Minor relief, amounting in most cases to less than 1 db change (and these over only a portion of the band), in some of the requested characteristics would greatly improve the over-all yield.
