LOW PRESSURE TIRE DYNAMICS STUDY. PART I. 49 X 17/24PR AND 17.00-20/22 PR TIRES.
Abstract
The continually increasing requirements for airborne logistic support to isolated troop elements has demonstrated the need for such support aircraft to operate from unprepared or semi-prepared airfields. In order to effectively perform this mission these aircraft often have to operate from landing strips which are below the minimum surface bearing strength level for which the aircraft were designed. To provide these aircraft with such an emergency capability, landing gear tire inflation pressures have to be reduced in order to decrease the tire unit loading on the operating surface. This program investigates the practical limits to which tire inflation pressures can be reduced for emergency operations. (Author)
