ECM AEROSPACE ANTENNA STUDIES. VOLUME 2.

Abstract

This quarterly report describes the progress in the development of a plasma simulation facility to simulate the effects of re-entry plasmas on antenna patterns. Progress in the development of a gas mixing facility for preparing Penning mixtures used in the simulator scheme is described. Plasma excitation power has been increased to 0.8 joules, so that higher gas pressures of 15-20 torr may be used. Collision frequency diagnostics are described. A double probe and a conductivity probe are described. Analytical calculations on antenna impedance of a plasma-coated slotted cylinder antenna are being improved. Calculations for a five layer approximation to an inhomogenous plasma were carried out. Work has also been started on developing analytic techniques for calculating the radiation pattern for slot antennas on a finite cone in a finite conical plasma. An outline of the technique is presented. (Author)
