ANALOGUE MEASUREMENT OF CHARGED PARTICLE TRAJECTORIES IN AN INHOMOGENEOUS MAGNETIC FIELD.

Abstract

The measurements described represent the first step in an experimental test of a classical impulse approximation for the capture process H(+) + CH4 yields H2(+) + CH3. Since the predicted cross-sections in the applicable energy range are on the order of 10 to the -18th power sq cm or less, the focussing properties of a thin lens beta ray spectrometer will be utilized to obtain maximum collection efficiency for the H2(+) ions. The result of measuring the axial component of the magnetic field strength is given. A current-carrying wire was used to simulate the trajectories of the H2(+) ions in the energy region 50-900 ev originating near the center of the magnet with a departure angle between 35 and 55 deg with respect to the magnet axis. Measurements of the trajectories as well as the variation of departure angle with magnetic field strength at a fixed energy (delta theta/delta beta) sub E, were carried out. (Author)
