THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL ORIENTATIONS TOWARD SOCIAL RELATIONS IN CHINESE RESPONSES TO COMMUNIST MILITARY-POLITICAL CONTROL.
Abstract
This memorandum deals principally with the processes and effects of thought reform as applied to Chinese soldiers by the Chinese Communist regime. Accounts of these processes and estimates of their effects have tended to fix attention on the two elements of sheer intimidation and genuine persuasion (conviction). This paper raises the question of whether a third group of factors -- traditional Chinese understandings of and orientations toward group relations -- may not be equally important.
