ANALYSIS OF SOUND RECORDINGS AND WIDE BAND ECHOES FROM BLACKFISH.

Abstract

At 0829 on 20 May 1954 during Cruise P-424 of the Research Vessel PHYSALIA a pod of small whales identified as Blackfish (estimated to number between 100 and 200) were encountered 4 miles west of Gun Cay, Bahama Islands. A drawing of this whale is included along with a chart of the area. Since the primary purpose of this cruise was to make underwater noise recordings, facilities were immediately available to record the sounds of these marine mammals. This report presents the analysis of these recordings and of wide-band echo pulses received after completing the sound recordings.
