ON THE MELTING TRANSITION OF HIGH-MOLECULAR-WEIGHT DNA.
Abstract
One of the major difficulties in calculating transition curves for the melting of DNA is to take into account the fact that all of the base pairs do not have the same stability. Two kinds of base pairs of differing stability corresponding to adenine-thymine and guanine-cytosine are recognized by the model used in this paper. For a periodic arrangement of the two components an exact equation for the partition function is derived. An extension of this result to infinite periods (e.g. random distribution) is given based on perturbation theory. Some new mathemacical methods used to derive these results also prove valuab3e for discussing the simpler problem of the melting of one-component DNA. (Author)
