BASIC RESEARCH IN MICROWAVE DEVICES AND QUANTUM ELECTRONICS.

Abstract

Experiments with a simple frequency multiplier tube are described. Results of these experiments are presented in the form of curves showing the effects of varying different parameters and physical interpretations of these results and possible improvements are offered. Beam and coupling impedances are the main topics of study described. A method of calculating these impedances is presented. A comparison between cyclotron-cyclotron and cyclotron-synchronous modes of operation indicates the different ways in which their r-f energies are derived. A method of computing the cross-modulation products in a wideband tunnel-diode amplifier when the input signal, consisting of three slightly different frequencies, is applied to the device is described. The relative importance of various cross-modulation products is presented. The products of the triple frequency combinations, i.e., f sub m+f sub n -f sub l type, become very important. The effect of changing bias voltage is also explored. Cross-modulation products in a Crestatron amplifier are being studied experimentally. Signals of various power levels are combined at the input so that the nonlinear behavior of the tube as it is driven strongly into the saturation region can be studied. (Author)
