FREQUENCY MULTIPLIER.

Abstract

The first part of this report contains a study of the capabilities and limitations of nonlinear elements, varactors and varistors, used in solid-state frequency multipliers. Whereas at input frequencies below 20 to 25 GHz varactors produced superior multiplier efficiencies, above these frequencies use of varistors should be seriously considered. Some types of varactors, step-recovery, bimode, or hyperabrupt diodes, have power-handling and/or frequency limitations. The varactor imbedding circuits must conform to several conditions to enable a varactor to perform at optimum efficiency. At higher frequencies, design of a waveguide imbedding circuit poses a number of challenging problems. A short bibliography of pertinent literature and indications of state-of-the-art multiplier performances are included. The second part of the report contains design information and experimental data of multipliers comprising the 21.7 MHz to 100 GHz Solid-State Multiplier Exploratory Development Model, and several other operational multipliers, designed and tested during the program, but not used in this final model.
