STUDY OF NOISE REDUCTION TECHNIQUES FOR VARACTOR HARMONIC GENERATOR TYPE MICROWAVE SOURCES.

Abstract

The first section of this report includes both amplitude modulation (AM) noise and frequency modulation (FM) noise spectra which have been measured on a Microwave Associates built U. S. Navy S-band solid-state source. These measurements covered the video range from 1 kHz to 20 MHz from the carrier frequency. A block diagram of the noise measuring system is shown. Noise measurements have been continued on the X-band solid-state varactor harmonic generator source with particular emphasis placed on noise reduction at video frequencies below 5 kHz. Various oscillators, both high power and low power, followed by buffer amplifiers have been constructed and matched to the power amplifier of the frequency multiplier. The details of these investigations will be presented in a subsequent section. Noise measurements have also been made on X-band and Ku-band solid-state sources which consist of a high frequency voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) followed by one stage of high order multiplication.
