ION LASER DEVICE RESEARCH.

Abstract

Following the development of the high-power continuous-wave rf-ring-discharge ion laser, further development of this device can be reported. A number of such lasers have been constructed with output powers in excess of one watt total for the sum of powers in excess of one watt total for the sum of powers in the various argon visible laser lines. Stable laser oscillation has been obtained in other materials as well. These include krypton, chlorine, bromine, sulfur and phosphorus. Permanent-magnet structures have been developed which improve performance. Lifetime tests have shown that rf-ring-discharge ion lawers operating at full-rated power are capable of useful life far in excess of 1000 hours. A discussion is included in thois report of the oscillators and oscillator-amplifier combinations used to excite these ring-discharge lasers. (Author)
