SURFACE WAVE BEHAVIOR IN PHASED ARRAYS.

Abstract

This quarterly report describes mutual coupling measurements, in linearly polarized and in circularly polarized, planar, arrays of coaxial horn antennas. Measured coupling phase delay was found to be linearly proportional to distance suggesting that the mechanism of mutual coupling is a single mode slow wave propagating across the array face at a constant velocity. Each driven antenna element launched a cylindrical wave front expanding across the array face; a driven column launches a wave having a planar phase front similar to the classical Zenneck surface wave.
