SUPERCAVITATING LIFTING HYDROFOILS - SECOND ORDER THEORY.

Abstract

The first- and second-order problems of steady cavity flows past lifting hydrofoils, based on single spiral vortex cavity termination models, are studied in detail. The general first- and second-order solutions are identical in form and, in general, can be expressed in terms of simple analytical functions. Numerical calculations have been carried out for flat-plate and circular-arc hydrofoils. Good agreement is found between the present results and previous nonlinear or high order calculations made by others. It is also found, to a good approximation, that second-order results for hydrofoils of arbitrary shapes and with long trailing cavities can generally be expressed in simple terms of linearized results.
