YCO5 A PROMISING NEW PERMANENT MAGNET MATERIAL.

Abstract

The magnetic characterization of the yttrium-cobalt compound YCo5 was completed by a measurement of the crystal anisotropy constants. The results are analyzed and the conclusion is drawn that YCo5 is a new permanent magnet material which promises to surpass the energy product of the best magnets now available by a factor of three. First experimental results are presented which support this hope. The preparation of the alloy, its pertinent properties, and a production method for fine particle magnets are described. The technological and economic aspects of the new substance are discussed in comparison with other permanent magnet materials. It compares favorably in all respects except price. Possible modifications which will substantially reduce the cost are proposed and future work plans outlined. The discussion of YCo5 is preceded by a review of the present state of permanent magnet development, and those results of the theory of fine particle magnetism and permanent magnets which are necessary to understand the ensuing arguments.
