METEORIC EFFECTS ON LONG RANGE AND ORBITAL VEHICLES,
Abstract
Much speculation has been done on meteoric effects on space and orbital vehicles. Whipple (1957) has recently completed a paper which in the opinion of the author represents the best present day knowledge on the subject. It is the purpose of this paper to compare Whipple's latest estimates with earlier estimates, and to derive analytical expressions and procedures whereby these estimates can be applied to various satellites. It is shown that 'puncture' of a vehicle with thin walls by meteorites presents a very real problem and procedures for increasing lifetime are outlined. It is also shown that dust and other types of erosion will probably be negligible.
