USE OF A GLIDING UPPER STAGE TO ACHIEVE LARGE OFFSETS DURING ASCENT TO ORBIT,

Abstract

The possibility of using a lifting upper stage vehicle in a boost-glide modein order to achieve large offsets during launch has been investigated. When the trajectory is properly optimized, large savings in velocity requirements are realized, compared with performing the offset maneuver by a direct ascent technique. Thus, the study had identified another area of utility for lifting vehicles. (Author)
