MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE OF PLANKTON MOVEMENT.

Abstract

A mathematical model is presented representing the interaction of temperature, illumination, pressure and a seasonal cycle in determining the vertical distribution of a number of species of oceanic copepods. For each environmental factor there is an index of 'preferred' conditions and an index of sensitivity to departure from these. The variations of these indices diurnally and through the population are discussed. An attempt is made to characterize the behaviour of species in relation to the depths which they occupy in the daytime and at night. The behaviour characteristics associated with diurnal migration are discussed and also the degree of variation of behaviour characteristics within the population of a species. An attempt is made to use the model to predict the relative abundance of a species in different geographic regions whose hydrographic conditions are known. (Author)
