TACTICAL ORBITAL PROGRAMMER.

Abstract

The prospect of using satellite communication for command and control operations will increase the complexity of military communication terminals. Such primary functions as satellite acquisition and tracking data calculations, link scheduling, and most important, random multiple access operations are most features of a reliable military system. These operations must be performed by a digital programmer under strategic operations of a large node network. The objective of this effort was to investigate in some detail, the features of such a programmer and to recommend a functional design. The study began by defining the operational requirements of a communication terminal and determining which functions were amendable to automation. The following functions were selected for this study: Acquisition and tracking, communication scheduling, automated maintenance and checkout, and adaptive control of the modulation scheme. An estimate was then made of the magnitude of the scientific and logical data processing necessary to automate the selected terminal functions and operations. A survey of the state-of-the-art in programmer technology was then conducted to specify a design philosophy for a design specification for the programmer was made based on a state-of-the-art projection.
