MAINTENANCE-FREE SILVER-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT EMERGENCY APPLICATIONS.
Abstract
Evaluation of single level cells has been completed. While the charge characteristics are good, poor low temperature discharge and capacity maintenance make this system unusable for the battery. Capacity and electrode gassing data have shown that the best separator system for two level cells is porous Pellon and 6 turns of silver treated cellophane. A voltage offset is required for low temperature third electrode operation. Low impedance devices have not been found to be satisfactory. Other elements, such as thermistors, will be investigated. Battery heating will be required for low temperature charging. Work is continuing on the design of the electronic controls. A breadboard of a discharge regulator and low level sensor is in progress. A test regime for the battery has been developed which covers the required ranges of temperatures and charge and discharge rates. (Author)
