GAS-PHASE CHEMISTRY OF REENTRY.

Abstract

Combustion reactions associated with reentry are reviewed. First, clean-air chemistry is considered. Then, the reactions for graphite, hydro-clean-air chemistry is considered. Then, the reactions for graphite, hydro-carbon, and fluorocarbon heat shields are developed. The teneral approach is to simplify the scheme and to consider classes of reactions for various types of species. Initiation, transfer, and termination reactions for electronically excited molecules, free radicals, and charged particles are discussed for each system. (Author)
