A STUDY CONCERNING THE VALIDITY OF RAY ACOUSTICS IN OCEANIC SOUND PROPAGATION,
Abstract
In an infinite medium with constant sound velocity gradient, ray theory predictions are quite accurate for normal operating frequencies and for the sound velocity gradients to be expected in practice. The result that the intensity vectors are in the same direction is a curious one. One might have anticipated this by noting that the expression for the angle of the acoustic intensity vector does not contain frequency. Thus, if the intensity vectors were in different directions, ray theory would not, in this case, be the limit of wave theory for infinite frequency.
