THE RELATIVE SUPPLIES OF PHOSPHATE, NITRATE AND SILICATE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

Abstract

This report summarizes the data on nutrient chemistry from research cruises in the Aegean Sea, the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian and Leventine basins of the eastern Mediterranean. The ratio, by atoms, for phosphate, nitrate and silicate is determined in each basin and the relative concentrations from diverse Mediterranean areas is given. The mean values for organic phosphorus in the areas mentioned are also presented. A comparison is made with available data from the eastern Atlantic Ocean, which further points out the vey low nutrient levels existing in the Mediterranean area. (Author)
