HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPOSITES.

Abstract

Mathematical analyses have been developed making it possible for the first time to calculate stress patterns of multiple interacting cracks; a technique found for measuring the rate of water diffusion along a glass-resin interface which has provided strong evidence that diffusion can be very small; thick interfaces shown to change the stress concentration and stress pattern at resin-glass interfaces. In research on fibers and fabrication, commercially available short fibers and whiskers have been characterized to provide guidance in selection of fibers for fabrication studies. In education, a graduate course Composite Materials, has been conducted for project scientists and students in materials science. In communication a computerized research index system has been established to provide rapid retrieval of information in the literature.
