INVESTIGATIONS OF HIGH-POWER BEAM PLASMA INTERACTIONS.

Abstract

This theoretical and experimental research program is to determine the feasibility of utilizing interaction with electron beam or plasma wave modes characterized by electron velocity perpendicular to a magnetic field to develop new or improved microwave generators or amplifiers. The first quarter effort includes a study of such modes on a plasma column, theory of interaction between such modes and an initial attempt to demonstrate interaction. Resonant perpendicular wave modes on a plasma column were detected and directly mapped with a radially moveable probe. Wide ranges of magnetic field and plasma density were covered and agreement with theory was obtained. (Author)
