INVESTIGATIONS ON EXCITATION AND PROPAGATION IN IONIZED MEDIA.

Abstract

A study of the excitation and propagation of wave like disturbances in an ionized medium, such as the ionosphere, is made based on the linearized Euler's equation and Maxwell's equation. The local propagation constants of the basic modes of propagation are discussed. A computer program for the evaluation of these constants with given ionospheric properties is given. Methods of investigating the propagation of such waves in inhomogeneous and/or bounded media, such as ray tracing, invariant embedding, reflection and refraction, orthogonal expansion, and the use of a general matrix formulation are presented. A unified matrix-operator transform method for investigation of the excitation and propagation of disturbances in an ionized medium is proposed. (Author)
