VIBRATION AND LIFE TEST REPORT 3% RHENIUM/97% TUNGSTEN LAMPS.

Abstract

This report describes an investigation of the life and vibration-environment capabilities of 3 percent rhenium-alloy filament lamps. These lamps were evaluated as possible replacements for the pure tungsten filament lamps currently used in the TITAN II optisyns, which have experienced filament failures after normal periods of use. This report provides the results of the preliminary qualification-level vibration test, the 5,000-hour operational test, the repeat qualification-level vibration test, and the electrical and visual examinations conducted on these lamps. Since the 3 percent rhenium-alloy filament lamps demonstrated equal or greater life expectancy and greater output stability than the pure tungsten-filament lamps, the rhenium lamps were concluded to be suitable replacements for the tungsten lamps. Appendixes include a Lamp Life Test Report showing results of tests on lamps with filaments of various materials and indicating significant methods for extending lamp life, and an Optisyn Vibration and Life Test Report showing results of tests performed on optisyns equipped with tungsten lamps.
