FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BOMBING-NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING TRAINER: THE AN/ASB-4 MAC-3 TRAINER.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to provide recommended functional specifications for an AN/ASB-4 MAC-3 Trainer in response to possible requirements of the Strategic Air Command for the procurement of trainers of this type to support on-the-job maintenance training for this bombing-navigational system. The MAC (Malfunction and Circuitry) trainer is a kind of complex electronic system simulator, suitable primarily for training in data flow, basic system operation, and troubleshooting procedures, which is characterized by the reduction of system operation, including malfunction conditions, to the binary level; that is, a level at which all of the complex functions and indications are expressed primarily in terms of change--no change or present--not present. The circuitry of such a trainer is designed to provide for the quick insertion of a large number of realistic malfunctions which serve to direct the trainee in the recognition of symptoms, the use of procedural checks for gross isolation, the selection of the appropriate data-flow schematics, and the proper use of test equipment.
