THE EARTH'S RADIATION BELTS.

Abstract

A review of the history and progress in the understanding of the earth's radiation belts is given. The albedo neutron decay and diffusion injection theories are discussed and their predictions are compared with the experimental data. The limitations of the experiments and theories are emphasized. It is concluded that our knowledge is still inadequate to explain the sources and losses of particles in the radiation belts.
