THE MAC-2 TRAINER AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR A MOCKUP IN THE PERFORMANCE TESTING OF K-SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTERS)

Abstract

Because of its design the MAC-2 Trainer is excessively difficult to substitute for a K-System mockup in troubleshooting performance testing. There are two intrinsic features of the Trainer that lead to this conclusion. (1) Since the Trainer is a binary or g0--no go system, restrictions are automatically placed on the choice of malfunction problems. As a general rule, Trainer malfunctions are easier than those typically encountered on the job. (2) Many Trainer malfunctions do not behave in exactly the same way that they do on a mockup. It is quite difficult to develop testing materials, e.g., instructions and symptom presentation techniques, that compensate for or avoid these discrepancies. It is not an easy matter to teach examines how to operate the Trainer, quite apart from its behavioral idiosyncrasies. Perhaps the Trainer's biggest advantage is that it reduces the average time required to test each mechanic. However, this saving in testing time is more than offset by the length of the training period that appears to be necessary.
