IMPROVING THE ABILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL SOLDIER TO EMPLOY A MAP AND COMPASS IN LAND NAVIGATION.
Abstract
The subject of this research was to develop an individual training program to include: (1) detailed lesson plans oriented toward improving the ability of the individual soldier to employ a map and compass in land navigation and (2) a proficiency test to measure this ability. An analysis of the situations which confront the individual soldier as he traverses unfamiliar terrain, and the results of experimental pilot studies, led to the development of a ten-hour experimental course of training and a four-hour proficiency test. The ten-hour course of instruction in map reading and use of compass constituted the conventional training against which the experimental program was tested. One platoon of basic trainees received the experimental training; another received the conventional training. Upon completion of the training both platoons underwent the proficiency test. The results of that test were used as a basis for comparing the effectivenss of the two training programs.
