PHOSPHORANE POLYMERS. PART 3

Abstract

A new synthetic route to bis tertiary phosphines, utilizing n- butyllithium was developed and has resulted in the improved syntheses of these vital intermediate compounds. The new bis-tertiary phosphine, 4,4'- bis(diphenylphosphino)dipheny ether was then successfully prepared and converted to the corresponding bis-azidophosphorane. This bis-azidophosphorane was polymerized and resulted in the first polyphosphorane from which long flexible fibers could be drawn. The new methylphenylphosphinic azide and its triphenylphosphine phosphorane were readily prepared and shown to be stable to heat and to hydrolysis.
