ANALYSIS OF NONLINEAR IRREGULAR NETWORKS.

Abstract

The characterization of a broad class of nonlinear networks, defined in terms of the type of network elements admitted in the class, is investigated. For the defined class of networks, criteria are established for the characterizability of a network in the form of a set of differential equations in the normal form. On the basis of the characterizability criteria, a systematic procedure is developed to identify the networks that cannot be represented in the desired form or whose characterizability is not determinate with the network topology and element types. These networks are defined to be irregular. A systematic method is developed to modify any irregular networks in the defined class so that they can be characterized in the desired form by means of augmenting the given network with small parameter network elements. The prescribed method is optimum in the sense that the method requires the minimum number of small parameter network elements for the modification. The qualitative dynamic behaviors of irregular networks have been analyzed in order to establish criteria for the existence of determinate response on the basis of the representation derived for the modified network. An efficient computing scheme for the determinate response of an irregular network is demonstrated, and several examples of computer analysis are included for illustration.
