DEFLECTIONS OF LIGHT RAYS TRAVERSING A MEDIUM WITH MACROSCOPIC RANDOM INHOMOGENEITIES. APPLICATION TO SCHLIEREN ANALYSIS OF A TURBULENT WAKE.

Abstract

The problem of the deflection of light rays in traversing a medium with randomly located macroscopic optical inhomogenieties or blobs imbedded in it is treated. The ray deflections are assumed to occur at the interfaces between the medium and the blobs. The solution is given in terms of the probability distribution of blob radii, the statistical nature of the blob surfaces, and the optical deflection characteristics of the individual blob. An application to the schlieren analysis of turbulent wakes is made using a so called partial mixing wake model. The results are in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental results of Clay et al., for reasonable values of the model parameters and simple choices for the probability distributions. (Author)
