RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF MANUFACTURING METHODS FOR PBI FIBERS AND FIBROUS STRUCTURES OF PBI YARNS.

Abstract

An improved process for producing PBI polymer was developed and scaled-up to yield fiber grade polymer at a rate of 150 pounds per day. Spinning and after-processing methods also were developed to produce over 1400 pounds of drawn PBI yarn with average properties of 4.9 grams per denier tenacity, 23% elongation and 107 grams per denier modulus, all of which exceed target specifications. Over half of the yarn has been submitted to the Air Force for evaluation of high temperature properties and the remainder has been woven into specified structures for testing. The latter results are reported separately, in Vol. III of this T.R. Vol. II of this report covers characterization work and tests. (Author)
