INVESTIGATION OF THE KINETICS OF CONDENSATION.

Abstract

The kinetics of condensate droplet formation in an expansion chamber has been studied by high-speed photography through the microscope. The film was synchronized with the expansion. The rate of expansion was determined in calibration experiments. Shadow pictures of the condensate droplets were obtained. The droplets appearing on the film were counted and their sizes were measured. Plots were made of the number of droplets and the droplet size against the time of expansion. The plots show that the formation of droplets starts with the expansion. The amount of condensate formed was estimated from the number of droplets and their size. It is of the same order of magnitude as the amount of condensible vapor produced by the expansion. The droplet sizes measured varied between 2.5 microns and 5.5 microns, increasing with the time of expansion. However, no small droplets were observed together with the large droplets. Hence, the time for the formation of the large droplets must have been much shorter than the time of exposure of a frame, 50 microns.
