SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES.

Abstract

This grant was issued for multiple investigations on the behavior, open-ocean handling, and the echolocation ability of porpoises. These investigations were divided into three phases: (1) Studies of the diving capability of the rough-tooth porpoise, Steno bredanensis; (2) The development and testing of open-ocean animal handling equipment, including long-distance transport tanks, and towable and collapsible cages which could be used in the open ocean situation; and, (3) The investigation of the directionality of porpoise echo-location signals and the possible use by them of the peculiar odontocete lower jaw as a wave-guide for the transmission of high-frequency sounds to the middle ear.
