The Systems Platinum-Carbon and Iridium-Carbon

Abstract

The eutectics in the Pt-C and Ir-C phase diagrams were studied in this investigation. Both systems are of a simple eutectic type with very limited solid solubility of carbon. The eutectic point of the Pt-C systems exists at 16.8 + or - 1.0 at. (1.23 + or - 0.09 wt.) percent degree C and 1705 degree + or - 13 degree C, and that of the Ir-C system at 29.0 + or - 1.0 at. (2.49 + or - 1.0 at. (2.49 + or -0.12 wt.) percent C and 2150 degree + or - 22 degree C.
