300 MILLIWATT X-BAND TRIODE OSCILLATOR.
Abstract
The development of an X-band triode cavity oscillator capable of giving 300 mW of continuous-wave power output and covering a frequency range of 8.850 GHz to 9.170 GHz with single shaft tuning is the objective of this program. Ten operable triodes were constructed. Improvements of anode and cathode seals resulted in four consecutive vacuum tight tubes. Four of the ten tubes were assembled with ribbed grids. This type of grid was investigated as a means of eliminating frequency modulation generated by the unsupported grid structure. Four cavity designs were tested. These are shown in cutaway views. Six of the ten tubes were tested in the cavities with three tubes being capable of oscillating. Power output in excess of 100 mW was obtained from one tube for a short period before the tube failed because of excessive plate dissipation. An analysis of tube failures if made. A description of the RF test facility is included as part of this report. (Author)
