ABSORPTION, PHOTOIONIZATION, AND FLUORESCENCE OF CO AND CO2 IN THE 600 TO 1000 A REGION.
Abstract
Absorption and photoionization coefficients of CO and CO2 have been measured in the 600 to 1000 A region using a 1 m Seya-Namioka scanning vacuum ultraviolet monochromator. The Hopfield helium continuum background source was used with photoelectric detection of the dispersed light. In both gases numerous peaks were observed at wavelengths that were found to agree well with those of the higher resolution photographic absorption spectra. In CO, two well-defined ionization continua followed the first and second ionization potential, and continua due to dissociation were observed. Efficiencies for preionization of the progressions and Rydberg bands of the sharp and of the diffuse series converging to the B2 sigma + state were estimated. Total fluorescence emission associated with the A2pi state of CO+ was measured, and the onset was found to contain vibrational structure. In the CO2 measurements, the total continuum underlying the band structure has been estimated as well as that fraction due to ionization and dissociation. A strong fluorescent edge containing vibrational structure was observed at 715.7 A, and was attributed to radiation from the 2 pi u state of CO2+. A weak fluorescent peak was also present at 795 A, and a dissociative excitation process was proposed as the origin of the radiation. (Author)
