GLASS LASER DAMAGE RESEARCH.

Abstract

Previous data on laser damage in glass are difficult to interpret because of incomplete characterization of the experiments. Several points such as heat removal from the light focus, aberrations and optical absorption are being investigated to eliminate extraneous factors. Methods for measuring the distribution of light beam intensity, so that the focus can be characterized, have been set up. Preliminary damage data are given on four glasses which correlate with optical absorption, except in the case of a neodymium containing glass. A damage mechanism due to the neodymium ion is postulated and future methods for investigating it are described. Ultrasonic waves induced in glass by a Q-switched laser are being measured to test their relevancy to damage. The theory of generation by non-linear mixing through electrostriction and by optical absorption are treated. The data for 266Kc sound waves are given and shown to be in reasonable accord with the theory. (Author)
