PLANAR CONVERTERS FOR RADIOISOTOPE GENERATORS.

Abstract

This report covers the work accomplished for the research on planar converters for radioisotope generators. Specific tasks under this program include investigations of the feasibility of a dynamic cesium flow system (Integral Cesium Reservoir), and the development and evaluation of single-crystal tungsten emitters incorporated in planar converters. Efforts included the design and construction of an apparatus simulating the Integral Cesium Reservoir, and measurements of the flow characteristics of various porous ceramic plugs and stainless-steel capillary tubes. A special apparatus for measuring the cesium vapor pressure over cesium-carbon compounds at elevated temperatures was designed and fabricated. Single-crystal tungsten specimens have been prepared from commercial material having (110) surface orientation, and heat treatment experiments have been initiated. Quantitiative parameters to measure changes on the surface due to surface diffusion and evaporation have been devised and used to select proposed heat treatments. Optical and electron microphotography has been employed for surface examination of the specimens.
