TANTALUM ALLOY INGOT RELIABILITY AND SHEET ROLLING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.

Abstract

A manufacturing process was developed for the production of wide, flat sheets of a tantalum alloy for high strength, high temperature applications. In establishing initial consolidation practices for the Air Force selected Ta-30Nb-7.5V alloy, extensive tantalum segregation was encountered when incorporation electron beam melted niobium and electron beam melted tantalum bar as arc melted electrode input. Subsequent investigation demonstrated the need for the use of a master electron beam melted alloy of Ta-32.5Nb using blended tantalum-niobium powders as input material to the electron beam furnace. Final melting practices resulted in 2460 pounds of extruded arc melted ingots which were processed to 1225 pounds of final sheet product. The obtained sheet sizes were 0.030 inch, 0.018 inch and 0.012 inch thick by 24 inches wide in continuous coils up to 776 inches long. All obtained sheets were tested for room temperature and elevated temperature tensile properties, elevated temperature creep rupture properties, room temperature notch tensile properties and formability. A statistical analysis of the tensile data was performed and, in turn, demonstrated the effect of vanadium content, nitrogen content, and material thickness of the tensile properties. (Author)
