CONSIDERATIONS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SYSTEM PARAMETERS FOR A UNIFORMLY SPACED, UNIFORMLY WEIGHTED, STEERED LINEAR ARRAY.
Abstract
In the design of an azimuthally steerable linear array of uniform spacing and element weighting, three quantities must be specified initially: (1) the required operating frequency band; (2) the maximum permitted beamwidth (angular resolution); and (3) the desired maximum steer angle. If it is assumed that the array elements, themselves, meet the bandwidth demand, both in impedance and directivity pattern, only two system parameters remain to be determined on the basis of the requirements just stated: (1) array length, and (2) element spacing (and hence, number of elements). An arithmetic procedure is presented in which the required value of these parameters may be approximated very simply in terms of the desired array characteristics. (Author)
