TARGET PLACEMENT ON A DETECTION PROFICIENCY COURSE.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to design a precise and economical target detection course by determining the ranges of the minimum number of targets necessary to cover all discriminable ranges within any given interval. Specifically, an answer was sought for the following question: given two successively presented human targets, how much farther away must one be from the other in order to be so perceived without error. The results of military interest may be summarized as follows: In order to maximize the precision and economy of a target detection proficiency course, each target should be placed about 25% farther away than the previous target; for example, if the first target is placed at 100 yards, subsequent targets should be located at 125 yards, 156 yards, 195 yards, etc.
