INVESTIGATION OF FAST WAVE BEAM-PLASMA INTERACTIONS.

Abstract

This report describes a program of work on beam -- plasma interaction. Both electrostatic and electromagnetic wave amplifying mechanism are under investigation. For the former, studies in the absence of a static magnetic field are directed toward verifying the theory for the cases of finite beam-infinite plasma, and beam-surface wave amplification, when transverse modulation is applied. Some preliminary experiments on a dipole resonant coupling system are reported. Two distinctly different lines are being followed for interactions in the presence of a static magnetic field: Electrostatic cyclotron harmonic wave interaction is being examined, both theoretically and experimentally, and the potentialities of electromagnetic wave growth in the 'whistler' mode are under study.
